<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For the past six weeks, I have been trying to connect with
the researcher and author, Kio Stark. I first became aware of Kio’s work in a TED video entitled, <a href="https://www.ted.com/talks/kio_stark_why_you_should_talk_to_strangers?language=en" target="_blank">Why You Should Talk to Strangers.</a> In it, she describes the beneficial effects for
us when we go out of our way to talk with strangers; making connections that
enhance our day as well as our lives. Shortly after watching the video, I read
her newly published book, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_6_19?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=when+strangers+meet+kio+stark&sprefix=When+Strangers+Meet%2Caps%2C147" target="_blank">When Strangers Meet</a>, which further details the
concept of engaging with strangers.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The reason I’ve been wanting to meet up with Kio Stark has
much to do with the essential work I accomplish when I make formal street portraits
of people I meet.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In listening to her on the video, and reading her book, I came
to the realization that her research validates the unconscious motivation that
drives my desire to photograph people. It has to do
with the concept of <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">street intimacy. </i><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Here is how she describes the phenomena:<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Talking to a stranger
is, at its best, an exquisite interruption of what you were expecting to happen…you
are…connected. Conversations with strangers fill an essential need….The name of
the need is intimacy.<o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">There is [a] kind of
intimate relationship, one that holds us together for just a fleeting moment
and then vanishes….This is street intimacy.<o:p></o:p></i></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;"><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7sXM3NYf5ySUSfPmax2OfsC-PbWWwPEfnluK79nfUwHptAbbz3-DCOA-CYofE6EADroUcU7dvVjWdwkzoA-YbKsP7a48IQ3DRkjCc_38cwhyphenhyphenUkZTRcdjOgmirj7n8vgpheENHJr6HYCVI/s1600/Taken+by+Kurt+Wittman+Aug+2015.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7sXM3NYf5ySUSfPmax2OfsC-PbWWwPEfnluK79nfUwHptAbbz3-DCOA-CYofE6EADroUcU7dvVjWdwkzoA-YbKsP7a48IQ3DRkjCc_38cwhyphenhyphenUkZTRcdjOgmirj7n8vgpheENHJr6HYCVI/s320/Taken+by+Kurt+Wittman+Aug+2015.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Now that I have a way
of identifying the feeling that comes up for me, the need for connection when I see a stranger I wish to photograph, I want to develop a project that explores
the reciprocal of this phenomena. That is to say, when a person agrees to allow me to
make their portrait, does this fulfill their own need to make a connection? Is this what motivates people to trust me enough to render themselves a little bit vulnerable and permit me to make their portrait? Does street intimacy actually work both ways, or is their motivation driven by something
else?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It’s a question I’d like to pose to Kio Stark…if only I
could reach her. Her web site has no “contact me” platform, and a Google search
produces a small bit of information but no email address. So I’m left to
composing this blog post, inserting it in a tweet to her, and seeing if I can
connect.<o:p></o:p></div>

Well, these images are about to enjoy their first exhibition as I Am Here: The Lesbian Portraits are set to be shown at the National Stonewall Museum, right outside of Fort Lauderdale in Wilton Manor. The public opening is set for Friday, and here's the formal announcement:<br />

In this series of photographs, Kalman made formal street portraits of lesbian community members using a large, 8x10 view camera while asking them the question, “What’s life like for you right now?” Their handwritten responses which are paired with their portraits create a remarkable look at life today in our community. As one young woman wrote, “To be genuinely authentic and carry no shame is a beautiful thing.” </span><br style="background-color: #fafafa; color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Tahoma, Calibri, Geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><br style="background-color: #fafafa; color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Tahoma, Calibri, Geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;" /><span style="background-color: #fafafa; color: #333333; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Tahoma, Calibri, Geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">Read more about the work here - </span><a href="https://phmuseum.com/news/robert-kalman-on-i-am-here" style="background-color: #fafafa; color: #417394; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Tahoma, Calibri, Geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; text-decoration: none;" target="_blank">https://phmuseum.com/news/robert-kalman-on-i-am-here</a><div class="blogger-post-footer"><a style="padding:0px; margin:0px; border:0px;" href="http://www.blurb.com/user/Larreynaga?utm_source=badge&utm_medium=banner&utm_content=120x50_published"><img style="padding:0px; margin:0px; border:0px;" src="http://www.blurb.com/images/badge/badge_120x50_published.png" alt="See my published books" title="See my published books"/></a></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-183811902936691808.post-77791631191728239272016-01-05T00:01:00.000-05:002016-01-05T00:01:10.477-05:00Tomorrow, January 6th<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span class="contenttext" style="font-size: 12px;">"Danielle" © Robert Kalman<br /><br />Artist's Statement</span><span class="contenttext" style="font-size: 12px;">A portrait has as much to do with the relationship between the sitter and the photographer as it does with creating a representation of the person on a sheet of film. The relationship expands when you, the viewer, become present and join us. Portraits reveal, and this series holds on to a moment of shared intimacy between me and people I stop on the street. And now, you are included in this intimacy as you view what the two of us have created. Finally, the handwritten note along side the image: it is meant for you.<br /><br />About the photographer<br />For over thirty years, <a href="http://www.robertkalmanweb.com/">Robert Kalman</a> has been making formal, large format portraits of people he meets on the street. In addition to his large format portraiture, he has worked as a freelance editorial photographer for regional newspapers and magazines in the northeast. He has studied with photographic luminaries such as the late Arnold Newman, the late Mary Ellen Mark, Marie Cosindas, Judy Dater and Jeff Cowen. His work has taken him to Mexico, Israel, Paris, London, Rome, New York City, Lisbon, Madrid, Istanbul, Budapest and Panama.<br /><br />Among Robert’s published work: a book on interracial couples, and one on the Kuna of Panama, as well as several volumes of portraits made on the streets of New York and cities across Europe. His latest book is devoted to Nicaraguan villagers photographed twenty years apart. Robert’s most recent work is a series of diptychs; formal street portraits shown along side descriptions that are handwritten by the sitter. These have been exhibited widely: In New York City at The Soho Photo Gallery and The Center for Photographic Art; in Poughkeepsie, NY at Barrett Art Center; in Portland, OR at Black Box Gallery; in Philadelphia at ONWARD Compé; and in Fort Collins, CO at The Center for Fine Art Photography<br /><br />Robert Kalman and his wife, Linda, live in the Mid-Hudson Valley region of New York. </span></div>

Last Sunday we set up on the corner of St. Marks and Second Avenue in the East Village, and chased down Jax. She seemed to enjoy the experience of being photographed so much she wrote this Facebook entry:<br />
<br />
<div style="background-color: white; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><i><span style="color: #666666;"><span style="line-height: 16.0799999237061px;">I was walking down the street, minding my own business when this woman chases me down the block flailing her arms. Naturally I assumed she was another East Vill</span></span><span class="text_exposed_show" style="color: #666666; display: inline; line-height: 16.0799999237061px;">age Crazy but eventually I took out my New York Defense System, otherwise known as earbuds and listened to what she had to say. She enthusiastically says..."Excuse me, are you a lesbian?" I roll my eyes and snidely reply "what gave me away?" She goes on to explain that she is working with this photographer who is doing a series and wants to photograph me. I am suspicious but cautiously follow her to where this gentleman is eagerly waiting with a huge camera already set up. I was sweating bullets and all I could think was "Great, the one time I professional wants to photograph me and I'm wearing gym clothes. Perfect."</span></i></span></div>
<div class="text_exposed_show" style="background-color: white; color: #666666; display: inline; line-height: 16.0799999237061px;">
<div style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-top: 1em;">
<span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;"><i>After he photographed me he asked me to write something down that "defines me". I was put on the spot and drained of all inspiration. After awkwardly taking ten minutes to come up with some pearls of wisdom, all I could think was..."Damn, no spell check. I hope I don't embarrass myself." Just when I was about to write "Bye Felicia" it finally came to me.</i></span></div>

Just last week, for example, we set up in front of the Cubbyhole, a bar in the West Village section of Manhattan catering to a gay clientele, and waited for likely looking subjects to pass by. When we stop potential subjects, sometimes we are met with a good-naturedly asked question, "Why do you think I'm a lesbian?" and sometimes we are turned down because the person is straight. For the most part, however, the people we stop respond favorably and consent to having their portrait made.<br />
<br />
That was the case with Tanja, a striking-looking German woman we met in Provincetown.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<br />Considering her look, the fact that she was with several other women as they strolled through the gay community of Provincetown led us to the conclusion that she was a lesbian. Imagine the surprise then in receiving the following, charming email from Tanja early this morning (grammar and spelling have not been corrected): <div>

<i><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">Dear Robert,<br />I saw my picture on your homepage yesterday. I'm really honored and I like it very much. It was a speziell experience. I noticed the titel of the project and I think you have to know that I'm not homosexuell. I can't remember if you or the nice women told me about that before we startet to take the picture. Otherwise I would have mentioned this immediatly. I would be very proud if you don't change the picture but I will understand your descision if you will do.</span></i></div>

<br /></div>
I routinely read an online forum called <a href="http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/" target="_blank">Large Format Photography</a>. Earlier in the summer I read a query from a photographer who was planning on traveling across the country, asking about current exhibits that he could check out along the way. A photographer by the name of Andrew Frost answered: <i>"If you pass through Kansas, I have some <a href="http://tonjatorgerson.com/2013/04/street-work/" target="_blank">photographs</a> and a set of books I made in collaboration with a printmaker up at the Lawrence Art Center... 40x50 inkjets from 8x10." </i> Coincidentally, I was about to make a family trip to Lawrence, so I decided to drop by and check out his work.<br />
<br />
Andrew's photos and handmade books proved to be exceptional. His 40x50 inch prints were full of rich, meticulous detail, and his handmade books were one-of-a-kind show pieces. The work just blew me away. Inasmuch as I am currently working on a project entailing large format prints, and I have a new found interest in book making, I decided I would track down Andrew and see if he would answer some questions.<br />
<br />
Turns out that Andy lives only about fifty miles from where I live. When I contacted him by email and asked if he would be able to meet me to talk about his work, he graciously agreed. So, over coffee on Sunday, Andy met with me for two hours, generously sharing his deep technical knowledge about printmaking, and patiently answering all of my naive questions.<br />
<br />
So, consider today's blog post as a shout out to <a href="http://www.andrewpfrost.com/" target="_blank">Andy Frost</a>, as well as an ironic acknowledgement that two, metropolitan New York photographers could connect with one another through a photo exhibit in Lawrence, Kansas, of all places.<br />
<br />
I encourage you to spend a few minutes linking over to sample more of <a href="http://www.andrewpfrost.com/" target="_blank">Andy's fine work</a>.<br />

We were working on our lesbian project in Provincetown last weekend, approaching likely candidates in the street as they walked by. We stopped one great-looking woman who had a couple of children in tow along with her partner. Initially, she thought we wanted to photograph the kids and demurred. Once we explained our project and made it clear that we wanted to make <i>her</i> portrait, she agreed.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A few days later, as a result of our brief session, the subject of the portrait wrote a poignant blog post, which she has agreed to let me repost, as long as I maintain her anonymity. The repost, sans links, is below, as is her finished portrait. The post speaks for itself...</div>

I could let them fill the space between us with the want to document our

our kids." And then the man surprised me. Already, I liked his gentle way.
The welcome in his glance, which said he knew things about the world that I did
not and that I could only wonder about, left me wanting to hear what he had to
say. He redirected the conversation despite the wall I was quick to erect &
asked for just me. Not my kids. Not my beautiful wife. Just me. Because I fit

worse, men. "I'm looking for masculine looking women," he said. And

him for pushing forward with such a project. Thanked him for being kind.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

The writer, Austin Kleon, has advocated as much in his popular book, <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Show-Your-Work-Creativity-Discovered/dp/076117897X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1437318153&sr=8-1&keywords=show+your+work+austin+kleon" target="_blank">Show Your Work</a>, </i>suggesting that posting not only enhances one's findability, it also builds reputation which can lead to opportunity.<br />
<i><br /></i>
On the other hand, my friend who is knowledgeable about managing images online, is constantly reminding me to be careful about what I post, and about how easily work can be stolen. She alerted me, for example, that some <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/95976669@N05/" target="_blank">misguided soul in Beijing</a> had recently stolen over thirty of my pictures (as well as the photos of other photographers) and repurposed them as illustrations. While I was suitably outraged when she told me, I've learned to shrug it off as a poor imitation that is perceivable as a compliment.<br />
<br />
A published photographer I know made a similar appeal to me as my friend's the other day: "Why would a publisher be interested in bringing out your work", he asked, "when you're giving them away for free?"<br />
<br />
Turns out that a whole bunch of serious writers have learned that there is, indeed, great value in giving away work for free. Giving work away builds audience, it builds attention and it leads, ultimately, to selling work. You can read about it <a href="https://medium.com/medium-writing-prompts/why-give-away-your-work-for-free-5ed4513d5fa8" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
So, despite the well-intentioned advice I've received, I'm going to continue to "give away" work.<br />
<br />
Here's a selection my latest.<br />
<br />
Is there any feedback?<br />

I saw a piece that I absolutely fell in love with, but walked on, thinking that I should see what else was available before deciding to buy. Of course, by the time I returned the piece had already been sold. Then and there I made myself a promise: when there is opportunity, act; do not wait, because it only leads to disappointment.<br />
<br />
It is a promise I have broken hundreds and hundreds of time.<br />
<br />
Chalk it up to inertia, that is, my own resistance to changing my state and acting. These days it usually happens when I see someone I want to photograph. I make dozens of excuses to myself because inertia freezes me up. You know, excuses like, "She's probably in a hurry," "The lighting isn't very good," "There's too many people in the way," "The sidewalk is too narrow." You get the idea.<br />
<br />
Yesterday, I had one of those moments. Passing a barber shop, I spotted an incredible-looking young woman through the window: attractive, slender, in a buttoned up white shirt and loud bow tie, and, best of all, without hair. I immediately manufactured excuses: I'll have to set up the 8x10, she's working and won't have time, we're walking over to another part of town and we're losing the light, and on and on... Stupidly I ignored my rule, allowed inertia to carry me on, and figured I had lost the picture.<br />
<br />
Apparently, the photo gods decided to give me a break. Because when the other side of town didn't pan out, I retraced my steps, and, when passing the barber shop once more, there she was, seated outside and talking on her cell.<br />
<br />
The rest of the details are not important. The fact that she reappeared was a sign to make her photo no matter what. It is viewable below; the bonus was the back story that she wrote to go along with the image. Perhaps after this, I will follow my Mexico City rule without ever hesitating.<br />

<br />
My own Mary Ellen Mark story links back to the early 1990's when I took a weekend workshop with her at the Center for Photography in Woodstock, NY. She was generous with her knowledge and wisdom, and was quite kind to me, a relatively young, emerging photojournalist.<br />
<br />
I was dazzled by Mary Ellen, and wanted to give her something of my own, as a way to thank her for a remarkable workshop experience. So, rather naively, I made a print of an image fresh from my first journey to Nicaragua. It was this:<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnUAUtJZOCY8KUjwAaxVNMgBkUL2IeCUjKBR8gN8gm5u-XcxUAh691p1_M2Hof8G1V0oEcAN08FuKL5cL7ll-ZqY7_NrDyUHbgLwTSxHTTmZgriC89g9A5sYWKQUcFI2MoHAcTy6AC_d5H/s1600/Reyna.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnUAUtJZOCY8KUjwAaxVNMgBkUL2IeCUjKBR8gN8gm5u-XcxUAh691p1_M2Hof8G1V0oEcAN08FuKL5cL7ll-ZqY7_NrDyUHbgLwTSxHTTmZgriC89g9A5sYWKQUcFI2MoHAcTy6AC_d5H/s400/Reyna.jpg" width="265" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Reyna</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I was proud as hell of this picture, and Mary Ellen was most gracious in accepting it. Looking back, however, I have no idea what she might have done with it except either relegate it to some file, or, more expeditiously, to the trash.<br />
<br />
In any event, any one who has experienced Mary Ellen's remarkable work is all the richer for it. I know that is the case for me.<div class="blogger-post-footer"><a style="padding:0px; margin:0px; border:0px;" href="http://www.blurb.com/user/Larreynaga?utm_source=badge&utm_medium=banner&utm_content=120x50_published"><img style="padding:0px; margin:0px; border:0px;" src="http://www.blurb.com/images/badge/badge_120x50_published.png" alt="See my published books" title="See my published books"/></a></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-183811902936691808.post-47561549031914911202015-05-24T13:42:00.003-04:002015-05-24T13:42:47.840-04:00<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
The portrait I made of <a href="http://bit.ly/1KXIh1C" target="_blank">Danielle Santos Bernal</a> created a great deal of interest. So much so that I'm now working on a project making portraits of lesbians for a prominent museum in Florida. While Danielle was quite adamant in being characterized as "butch," not all women who favor a masculine look favor that word. (When I asked one woman if she thought of herself as butch, she told me, "That's a very strong word. Let's just say that I identify with members of the lesbian community.")<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBEYORoDbhQVJy8awXXiOK7Z7s0v3I4ET4ZPwzVvji8xulnlc9J9dXinmxytR-Ty9a5ZNaaEqD2X3ZTTNvuzLFqhrLTmHGj9nS6_oNoqH-BynXV9zXwPBvcYle6f5gsEqmhYkSS6LiEWtG/s1600/Erin+Moody+Diptych.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="250" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgBEYORoDbhQVJy8awXXiOK7Z7s0v3I4ET4ZPwzVvji8xulnlc9J9dXinmxytR-Ty9a5ZNaaEqD2X3ZTTNvuzLFqhrLTmHGj9nS6_oNoqH-BynXV9zXwPBvcYle6f5gsEqmhYkSS6LiEWtG/s400/Erin+Moody+Diptych.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>

<br />
So, in deference to the lesbian community, let me say that I am interested in making portraits of women who identify in that way <i>and</i> have a particular look.<br />

<br />
When an image starts to unexpectedly take off, however, I usually forget that the image probably made it to the "Explore" section of the Flickr site. Such is the case with the portrait of "Ariel," which I posted yesterday. Usually the viewership rises slowly over the first several days and levels off into about a thousand views in about three weeks. Ariel shot up to over 3,000 in a matter of hours, and, when I checked out "Explore," there she was.<br />
<br />
Now, perhaps someone can explain to me how a photo is selected for "Explore" on Flickr, because I had first posted a cropped version of Ariel in mid-April and it never made it to Explore. Once again, "go figure."<br />

<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/annalisaceolin/" target="_blank">Annalisa Ceolin</a> publishes an online magazine, Visions, which draws out a theme using the work of well-known, master photographers, strong practitioners, and relatively unknowns. I'm a member of that third category. That's why when Annalisa contacted me and asked me to contribute to the latest issue, "Backstage," I was deeply honored.<br />
<br />
So, please take a moment to look through the many, many fine images <a href="https://contrastedgallery.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">in this issue</a>. (And to think I'm in the same publication with the likes of Stanley Kubrick, Ingmar Bergman and Orson Welles.)<br />

This is part of the "contract" we make with one another: I get the rights to publish their image and, in exchange, they get a copy. Most folks simply receive the photo with thanks; a few use the image for their Facebook page or for some other personal use. Occasionally, someone will alter and misuse the image. Here's one example:<br />
<br />
We photographed Alee in Istanbul, a fellow photographer who shoots fashion. Here is the portrait:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbhpg8jbyb2bzHOcIMwMAPP5tQyBLm4Y58YrLugozkadUK-z5VsInVXXULVbI7ocQlx83bPQT4IoHFz9olOa1MlqYzPBDlL7603zL9c_yFfu_Etxm7GMjdxLrIeaiqoZpbQd1nmCeZhaAU/s1600/8+-+Alee+(2).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbhpg8jbyb2bzHOcIMwMAPP5tQyBLm4Y58YrLugozkadUK-z5VsInVXXULVbI7ocQlx83bPQT4IoHFz9olOa1MlqYzPBDlL7603zL9c_yFfu_Etxm7GMjdxLrIeaiqoZpbQd1nmCeZhaAU/s1600/8+-+Alee+(2).jpg" height="400" width="317" /></a></div>
<br />
For some weird reason, Alee decided to crop and heavily Photoshop his portrait, subsequently posting it on his Facebook page. That's how I discovered it. Here's his doctored version:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1-1hIVKdIitxt_VvcfizjpWJk0U3Vpc8oHk6NtAZd7zlK3o4f8Zc5AhNgtJ6CUzK2tO3UYl4z5j5vCpsWBQbcwzLeKxpQVif8kcy7gi2Uf_ZtoWJrUERYl89tNdYaTF-9Y-9EOYNJnv7l/s1600/8+-+Alee+Tee+photoshopped+version.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1-1hIVKdIitxt_VvcfizjpWJk0U3Vpc8oHk6NtAZd7zlK3o4f8Zc5AhNgtJ6CUzK2tO3UYl4z5j5vCpsWBQbcwzLeKxpQVif8kcy7gi2Uf_ZtoWJrUERYl89tNdYaTF-9Y-9EOYNJnv7l/s1600/8+-+Alee+Tee+photoshopped+version.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
It's crude, laughably bad. He must have liked his image at some level, but he decided to "make it better." (I love how he altered his eyes and added white highlights to his beard and mustache).<br />
<br />
I asked him to take it down and his response was to unfriend me from Facebook. The only thing that rankles was that my name was attached to the image. I guess in altering the portrait Alee never heard about the concept, "honor among thieves." I guess it serves me right for shooting another shooter.<br />
<br />

Even when you've been shooting for as long as I have it's important to acknowledge your heroes; those who inspire and inform one's work. <a href="http://www.joelmeyerowitz.com/" target="_blank">Joel Meyerowitz</a> is one of my heroes, and here's a short anecdote about how I almost got to meet him, related through some email correspondence that he and I had back in 2011: </div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">
<i>Dear Joel Meyerowitz,</i></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">
<i>I've been a Meyerowitz "fan" for years, so here's a mildly amusing anecdote:</i></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">
<i>Last week I was photographing in Provincetown for a continuing project on interracial couples. I shoot using a 4x5, and I got stopped four times during the day by people wanting to know if I was "Joel," or "Mr. Meyerowitz." One guy actually trailed me for a few minutes along Commercial Street in his car before he stuck his head out of the window to ask.</i></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">
<i>I guess they still remember you!</i></div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">
<i>Regards,</i></div>

<div style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">

<div style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">
<i>Years ago, you taught me a significant lesson about shooting portraits (in Redheads). You wrote that you only expose two sheets of film, because if you don't get it in two, you're not going to get it by shooting more. It was an extraordinarily valuable insight for me, and it altered my whole concept around the mechanics of making a portrait. </i></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">
<i>I wish I'd known that was you standing there; I could have thanked you for your help in person, rather than through this email.</i></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">

<div style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">
<i>Thanks, Joel.</i></div>

<i><b>Yes, it was those two but I didn't have funky glasses. Rimless simple ones, not sure if I was even wearing them, but you were too busy I suspect to notice and I was respectfully quiet except when I muttered 250th at 8 to get your attention, my little jokey contribution to sidewalk superintending.</b></i></div>
<div style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">

On Tuesday, I had an opening at the <a href="http://sohophoto.com/participate/competitions/portfolio-competition/" target="_blank">Soho Photo Gallery</a> and on Thursday I attended a second <a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/robertkalman/16418937994/" target="_blank">galley opening</a>, this time in the Chelsea District, where I had a single piece on display. Two NYC openings in a single week: pretty heady stuff!<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUOAGQ0K_sb_mH-CDqxps47GteVYR_43MhIcDk_yc8oVeDNjrT2wiF6QoaUV-JFfrIvDKE9i2587Pnn0z3I6VLc4VhtuE-2IrvpTVeA8DRUX5_ZsA2DfMi7zPkie7V6vtqdTRXq7nj3a2H/s1600/At+the+Show.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUOAGQ0K_sb_mH-CDqxps47GteVYR_43MhIcDk_yc8oVeDNjrT2wiF6QoaUV-JFfrIvDKE9i2587Pnn0z3I6VLc4VhtuE-2IrvpTVeA8DRUX5_ZsA2DfMi7zPkie7V6vtqdTRXq7nj3a2H/s1600/At+the+Show.jpg" height="400" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pride before the fall...</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Additionally, while at the Chelsea show, I managed to make some really nice contacts: First, I met the juror, <a href="http://www.ellen-denuto.com/" target="_blank">Ellen Denuto,</a> a very talented photographic storyteller, who was generous and thoughtful in her appraisal of my pictures. And I also managed to meet a great shooter, <a href="http://www.bobdemchuk.com/" target="_blank">Bob Demchuck </a>, whose work I have admired for quite some time.<br />
<br />
By the time the evening ended and I headed back to get my car and drive home I was feeling pretty damn good. Didn't anticipate the rude surprise that awaited me: No car!<br />
<br />
When we had arrived at five for the six o'clock opening I had fully expected to park in a garage. There waiting for me, however, was an open parking spot along tenth avenue. There were other cars parked. There wasn't a single sign posted. While that area has no parking from 8:00 to 6:00, I figured what the hell: There's only an hour left, there's no sign, there's a bunch of other cars. Besides this was my week, two openings!<br />
<br />
Not quite. I called 9-1-1. "My car's been stolen or towed," I told the operator. "You have to call 3-1-1," she told me. I called 3-1-1. "What's your license plate number?" the new operator asked. Shit, I thought, how the hell should I know. She connected me with the local police precinct. "My car's been stolen or towed," I said to the desk officer. "It's been towed," he said knowingly and without hesitation. "Go up to the tow pound on 38th."<br />
<br />
So I hailed a cab and made it over to the pound. I won't bore you with all the details of what it's like to retrieve your car under these circumstances. Suffice it to say that the experience had sort of a Soviet-style efficiency attached to it, complete with a lot of gruff, humorless civil servants who complete the transaction and then drive you to your car.<br />
<br />
For the privilege of having my car removed from the streets of New York it cost me $185. For the convenience of paying with a credit card the city thoughtfully added a courtesy fee of $4.60. Oh yes, when I was reunited with my vehicle there was a summons under the windshield wiper which informed me that the tow had taken place at 5:07pm, just moments after I had illegally parked, and that I owed the city another $65 for the sin of parking illegally. While I should have known better, after all I'm a native New Yorker, and I know I earned the parking ticket, did they really need to tow me?? (Now I know why the cop who told me it had been towed was so sure. It's standard procedure. Not to mention a rip-off!) This was a $254.60 lesson.<br />
<br />
Yep, it was quite a week.<br />
<br />
<br />

But last night, at the Soho Photo Gallery (<a href="https://www.google.com/maps/place/15+White+St,+New+York,+NY+10013/@40.7189735,-74.0056008,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x89c2598aa658fbfb:0xc5e730543402653a" target="_blank">15 White Street, NYC</a>) opening which included a showing of my work, I was really pumped! Not only did the gallery do an exceptional job of presenting my pieces, but lots of friends made a special effort to make it downtown on a night that was rainy and cold.<br />
<br />
Equally as gratifying, two of the portrait subjects were able to attend the opening. Below is a snap of me (doing my best to sustain my usual "calm" look) and Sarah Watson (who was brimming with high enthusiasm). Although you wouldn't guess from my expression, I was absolutely over the moon.<br />
<br />
I'll be at the gallery on Saturday, April 11th, from 1 to 6, if anyone would like to stop on over, take a look at the work and shmooze a bit. (The trip is well worth it; the other work in the gallery by six other photographers is really exceptional.)<br />
<br />
The show runs through May 2nd. Hope you can make it<br />
